Hermanus Whale Tour
On a day tour we take a leisurely scenic drive from Camps Bay accommodation, around the False Bay coast through Betty’s bay. We spend the day watching the whales and exploring the town, which is known for their boutique shops and craft market.
With its unparalleled scenic beauty, modern infrastructure, upmarket shops and endless adventure options, it’s little wonder that Hermanus has grown in size and popularity during the last decade.
The Southern Right Whale, so named because it was the Right whale to hunt is one of the success stories of conservation. Although hunted to near extinction in the early part of the century, since a ban was placed on hunting the whales in 1935 they have rebounded and return annually from their feeding grounds in the southern oceans to calve in the coastal waters of the Western Cape.
Every July The Southern Right whales, among other species migrate from the Antarctica into our coastal waters to calve and nurse their young. The animals, mere meters from the shore, provide an unsurpassed whale watching opportunity from the beginning of August to the beginning of December.
You can observe the Whales a few meters from the shore at one of Africa's best whale-watching points. You will experience a bond with the whales from the most exciting land based whale-watching venue in the world!
It’s no surprise then to discover the Whale Crier whose job it is to alert everyone to the whales’ whereabouts. And, should you need details to help you recognise him, other than the huge black and white ‘whale crier’ sign around his neck and his constant bugling, he’s the guy with an odd looking feather in his cap.
After lunch at one of the wonderful restaurants in Hermanus and browsing around in the shops and markets we make our way back to Camps Bay in Cape Town across Sir lowry’s pass where we will see a beautiful view of False Bay.
